Inspired by the unity and courage of the Ukrainian people, Finding Freedom: A Ukrainian Tale of Home is a beautiful ode to Ukraine.

A young Ukrainian girl finds her beloved hometown in gloom and despair. She hears people crying out for freedom, and wonders where their freedom might have gone. To find out, she sets out on an uplifting journey through the landscapes and folklore of Ukraine.

“I close my eyes and feel the breeze. I float through Black Sea shores. Wind whispers through the willow trees, and the mighty Dnieper roars.”

Paired with a glossary and pronunciation guide, this timely picture book creates an opportunity for an important discussion about Ukrainian cultural heritage and the meaning of freedom.

Heartfelt rhymes and vibrant illustrations highlight the uniqueness of Ukraine—its beauty, land and pride—despite the years of oppression, and spark a strong message that will kindle any heart.

A wonderful introduction into life in Ukraine!

The story has a somber beginning, people are pictured under gray skies with no smiles on their faces. It reminds me of how Ukrainian people have struggled for freedom throughout history. The story quickly becomes upbeat and joyful. We follow an innocent little girl’s journey through the countryside as she introduces us to many Ukrainian traditions. We meet the girl’s Babusia (grandmother), and are quickly immersed into Ukrainian culture. We learn about home-cooked Ukrainian food, music, dance, and holidays.
The author has thoughtfully enhanced the storytelling by cleverly using rhyming words. The literature has been well complemented with beautiful illustrations throughout.
Reading “Finding Freedom” was really heartfelt. I found myself reflecting on the struggles and joys that my parents experienced growing up in “the old country“ as they used to refer to their homeland, Ukraine.
I highly recommend “Finding Freedom“ to anyone interested in introducing their children or themselves to exploring Ukrainian culture through a heartwarming and beautifully illustrated story. This book will be shared, enjoyed and loved for many years to come in our family, and yes, there will always be an Ukraine!

Gave me goosebumps!

My girlfriend and I read this book together (she is from Ukraine). She teared up looking through the illustrations, and even though I have never been to Ukraine, the book evoked so many emotions and thoughts in me. I felt like I revisited my childhood, I felt so carefree. I also learned more about Ukrainian culture. Glossary in the back helped a lot! No matter how old you are or where you are from, this book will move you, inspire you and give you hope!
